I admit that I did not understand this verse, nor the meaning of the message of Christ to the seventh church, the church of the Laodiceans, in Revelation. (Rev. ) But I have since discovered that there are two ways to interpret the Greek word apostasia (translated in this third verse as "falling away"). Because of that discovery, I have experienced a renewed interest in the things the Apostle Paul had to say about the Church during the last days before the Rapture. " Tyndale, for example, translated it this way in his first translation from Greek to English.
He wrote to the church in Thessalonica: For this we (I) say unto you by the word of the Lord (1 Thess. 4:15). " The other disciples did not receive this teaching from the Lord which Paul was about to share with the believers; it was a special revelation to Paul alone. What was this great revelation? . that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent (precede) them which are asleep (dead). For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first; Then we which are alive and remain shall he caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
In another passage Jude refers to Jesus' return to earth: And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. Jude 14,15 Of course, this is not a reference to the Rapture, but rather to Jesus' return in judgment upon sinners.
