The answer surprises some people. Jimmy the Greek, who had downed a few drinks, having dinner.

Here’s what I knew about football: Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard had played for West Point during World War II. I had heard of Doak Walker, the triple-threat hero of a heroic time. I knew about O. J. Simpson. I didn’t watch football. I didn’t know anything about the game. I did not know—and I am not kidding—what a tight end was. ” Of course, Dave had done that countless times. But it was easier for him because of a simple fact I was to learn later on: when you write about a superstar while they are young, before they have the great success, you are a part of their formative years in a way.

And yet, while I admit I have resorted to trickeration to get stories such as this, there have been moments when the event simply told itself, and I needed only to be an observer who got it right. Those are the times when being a sportswriter makes you really feel you have gotten lucky, and that while your best friends from the old neighborhood are making more money, you’re the one with the fun job—even, I might say, an important job. Still, I wasn’t always aware of how important an event was at that moment, when I was caught up with catching a plane, or making a deadline, or being able to write while wearing gloves in an Alpine winter, say.
