In addition, the studies were conducted in order to empirically validate the claim that second language learning is similar to first language learning and is guided by universal, innate mechanisms.

Chomsky points out that there are many uses of language that go beyond the popular view of communication. He writes: Consider informal conversation conducted for the sole purpose of maintaining casual friendly relations, with no particular concern as to its content.
